Raymond F Greene, the top US envoy to Taiwan, emphasized on Wednesday that American support for the island is "rock-solid, principled, and bipartisan." He assured that Washington would uphold its commitments to help Taiwan defend itself against potential Chinese threats.
Greene's remarks come during a time of growing uncertainty regarding China's intentions towards Taiwan, coupled with global conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East that could involve the US further. He underscored Taiwan's priority status, particularly the security of shipping lanes in the Taiwan Strait separating Taiwan and China.
Referencing the Taiwan Relations Act, Greene stated that the US will maintain its capability to counter any coercive actions against Taiwan. Since 2010, the Executive Branch has notified Congress about approximately $38.4 billion in Foreign Military Sales to Taiwan, including $6.4 billion under the Biden administration. Greene also noted Taiwan's domestic arms production, which includes submarines and various missile systems.
