A medical student was taken into custody on Tuesday for allegedly assaulting and coercing a fellow student to convert to Islam, the Udupi police reported.

According to an anonymous complaint filed at the Manipal Police Station, Mohammad Danish Khan (27) befriended a Hindu co-student and invited her to his home on March 11, where he allegedly assaulted her.

The complainant stated that Khan persistently asked her to convert to Islam and threatened her with severe consequences if she did not acquiesce. She claimed to have received ongoing calls from Khan demanding her conversion up until August 28, when she finally lodged a complaint.

Khan, a medical student hailing from Rajasthan, was arrested and subsequently produced before a magistrate, who remanded him to judicial custody.
