Olivier Barbarin, mayor of the town near the fishing port of Boulogne-sur-Mer, confirmed the unfortunate event, stating, "It's a big drama." Rescuers managed to save 61 people from the Channel's treacherous waters.
Etienne Baggio, spokesman for the French maritime prefecture responsible for that stretch of coastline, also verified the casualties but noted that the exact number was still uncertain. The incident underscores the dangers faced by migrants due to increasingly strict asylum policies in Europe.
