Manipur Director General of Police Rajiv Singh on Tuesday highlighted the critical need for continued central forces support to handle the escalating violence in the state.

Since May last year, ethnic clashes between Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and hill-based Kukis have claimed over 200 lives and displaced thousands. Recently, militants have used drones to launch attacks on villages, further intensifying the conflict.

In the last two days, two individuals have been killed, and twelve others injured in drone and gun attacks in Sejam Chirang and nearby Koutruk in Imphal West district. Singh reaffirmed that the Manipur Police is fully committed to countering these threats.

After inspecting Koutruk and Kadangband, Singh said, "This is a new escalation, and we are taking it very seriously." He stated that the National Security Guards (NSG) and other experts are being consulted to find ways to counter the drone attacks.

"We are conducting operations in areas where the attacks have been launched and have seized items. Further combing operations are planned," Singh added.

Addressing criticisms aimed at the central forces for alleged inaction, the DGP acknowledged the necessity of central assistance due to manpower limitations in the state police force.

"The Centre is providing us with full support. We need the central forces because state police are also engaged in maintaining normal law and order. Reports of inaction will be investigated, and appropriate actions will be taken," Singh assured.
