Sasai Money Transfer, a leading international money transfer operator under Cassava Technologies, has announced a significant partnership with Airtel Money to broaden its groundbreaking Zero Fees initiative. Launched initially in May 2024 with Econet in Zimbabwe, this initiative now extends to Uganda, with plans to reach additional Airtel markets including Ghana, Malawi, Nigeria, Kenya, and Zambia.

The Zero Fees program eliminates remittance sending fees for users of Sasai Money Transfer based in the United Kingdom and South Africa, sending money to Uganda. Recipients in Uganda will also benefit from free cash-out options through their Airtel Money wallets. This comprehensive customer proposition aims to enhance both access and affordability for senders and receivers, making it a highly attractive offer in the region.

Addressing the prevalent issue of informal remittances in Africa, which often surpass formal remittance volumes and pose risks from unreliable intermediaries, Sasai Money Transfer is at the forefront of digitizing and formalizing these transactions. By closing the gap between informal and formal money transfers, the initiative strives to make essential financial services more accessible and inclusive for all Africans.

Mr. Japhet Aritho, Managing Director of Airtel Mobile Commerce Uganda Limited, emphasized the alignment of this partnership with Airtel Money’s commitment to financial inclusivity. He highlighted the synergy with Airtel Money’s consumer promotion, Vroomula Amajja, which offers customers the chance to win cash prizes and a Toyota Rav4 Hybrid for receiving remittances into their Airtel Money wallet.

The success of Sasai Money Transfer’s zero fees initiative with EcoCash in Zimbabwe has set a precedent in the remittance industry, providing relief from high transaction fees and becoming a vital support for families abroad. Mr. Darlington Mandivenga, CEO of Sasai Fintech, praised the partnership with Airtel Money Uganda as a strategic step into a major remittance market, reinforcing the company’s commitment to expanding its reach and impact.

With the Zero Fees initiative, Sasai Money Transfer is pioneering a transformative approach in the remittance industry, focusing on collaboration with Mobile Money Operators to make money transfer services more affordable and accessible. This innovative model addresses the high fees typically seen in the market and holds significant potential for further formalizing international money transfers, thereby enhancing financial security for users across Africa.
