The Kolkata Police on Saturday released Sayan Lahiri, one of the organizers behind the August 27 march to the West Bengal secretariat, from custody. The march was held to protest the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Following a petition filed by Lahiri's mother Anjali seeking to quash proceedings and grant bail, the Calcutta High Court on Friday ordered his release from police custody by 2 pm Saturday.
Lahiri, a leader of Paschim Banga Chhtra Samaj, was apprehended on August 27 for his prominent role in the rally, which authorities claim turned violent, resulting in property damage and attacks on security personnel. Lahiri expressed gratitude to Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and criticized those derailing the peaceful protest, while reaffirming his commitment to continue seeking justice for the allegedly murdered doctor.
