Brazil's Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes and billionaire Elon Musk are at loggerheads over the compliance of social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, with local laws. This dispute has pushed the platform to the brink of being blocked in Brazil.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has demanded that Musk adhere to Brazilian law. Musk, in return, has criticized Lula and de Moraes, calling them derogatory names on social media. Lula emphasized that no one, regardless of wealth, is above the law.
Justice de Moraes has stressed the need for regulation to combat hate speech and previously ordered X to block certain accounts involved in spreading misinformation. Amidst this, the Supreme Court has also frozen local bank accounts of Musk's Starlink satellite firm. Despite this, Musk promises continued support for essential services in Brazil.
