Union Minister of State for Women and Child Development Savitri Thakur has sharply criticized the West Bengal government over the rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor at a government hospital in Kolkata, accusing it of shielding the accused.
Speaking to PTI, Thakur stated that the Mamata Banerjee-led administration failed to take strict action against those involved in the tragedy, instead opting to protect them.
'A woman doctor, dedicated to saving lives, was brutally raped and murdered. This incident is not only tragic but also demands immediate and stringent action from the state's leadership,' Thakur asserted. She further alleged that the state government was complicit in the crime.
The body of the postgraduate trainee doctor was discovered on August 9 in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, triggering widespread protests from doctors and political entities across the nation. Thakur voiced deep concern for the safety of women in West Bengal, citing a worrying trend of sexual violence in the state.
