The Delhi High Court on Friday declined to grant interim bail to Popular Front of India (PFI) leader OMA Salam, who faces charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The charges stem from a case against the banned organization and its members.
A bench comprising Justices Prathiba M. Singh and Amit Sharma turned down Salam's request for a two-week release, citing the lack of a case for interim bail. The plea was filed on the grounds of his daughter's recent death and his wife's deteriorating mental health.
Salam, the chairman of PFI, was apprehended by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) during an extensive operation in 2022. According to the NIA, PFI members conspired to raise funds for terror acts and indoctrinated their cadres. Preceding the nationwide ban on PFI on September 28, 2022, a series of coordinated raids led to numerous arrests across 11 states.
