Aam Aadmi Party leader and Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh surrendered before a special court in relation to a 2001 street-protest case on Wednesday and was subsequently granted bail.
Singh's lawyer, Madan Singh, confirmed, 'The court granted him bail on a surety bond of Rs 50,000.'
Previously, on August 22, the Allahabad High Court had stayed the execution of the sentence given by the Sultanpur court. Last year, the special court had sentenced Singh to three months of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine for obstructing traffic and inciting violence during the protest.
Convicted alongside five others, Singh had his appeal dismissed by the sessions court on August 6 this year. The Lucknow bench of the HC had previously ruled that Singh need not surrender until his bail plea was heard, leading to the recent order for a personal bond of Rs 50,000.
