Chaos Erupts as Protestors Clash with Police at Howrah Bridge

On Tuesday, police resorted to lathi-charges, water cannons, and tear gas to control agitators at Howrah Bridge's Kolkata end and Santragachhi Railway station on Kona Expressway. The protestors attempted to break through police barricades to reach the state secretariat, Nabanna.
At Santragachhi, the situation escalated as agitators threw bricks at the police, resulting in several officers being injured. Protestors claimed that police action also resulted in injuries to several students.
The demonstrators, primarily from the student organization 'Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj' and dissident state government employees' platform 'Sangrami Joutha Mancha,' were demanding the removal of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the rape-murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College. According to police, force was used after protestors breached barricades and attacked security personnel.
