The Sri Lankan Navy has detained 11 Indian fishermen on charges of poaching in the nation's territorial waters, increasing this year's arrest tally to 333, official sources reported.
On Friday, the fishermen were apprehended, and their trawler seized near Point Pedro in Jaffna, Northern Province, as stated in a navy press release. They were taken to Kankesanthurai fishing harbour for further legal procedures.
This incident prompted Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister M K Stalin to write to the Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, highlighting the ongoing issue's severity. The repeated arrests significantly impact the livelihoods of Tamil Nadu's fishing community, Stalin noted. The fisherman issue remains a highly contentious topic between India and Sri Lanka.
