Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson, along with KwaZulu-Natal Public Works and Infrastructure MEC Martin Meyer, have announced plans for an urgent nationwide meeting to address the escalating issue of the construction mafia. The decision follows a disturbing report presented by MEC Meyer detailing the resurgence of criminal activities by the construction mafia in KwaZulu-Natal.

Minister Macpherson emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Shortly after I was appointed as Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, I vowed to deal decisively with the construction mafia and to restore the rule of law at construction sites across the country.” His resolve was further strengthened after a recent oversight visit to the uMkhomazi water project, where an altercation with the construction mafia resulted in the deaths of three individuals and the assault of another.

Recognizing the need for a coordinated response, Minister Macpherson and MEC Meyer have called for an urgent meeting with all Public Works MECs from across the provinces and Ministers from the Law Enforcement cluster. This meeting, to be held in KwaZulu-Natal, aims to develop a comprehensive strategy to combat the construction mafia, thereby safeguarding lives and fostering an environment conducive to infrastructure investment.

In addition to addressing the construction mafia, the meeting between the Minister and MEC Meyer also explored the potential reform of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) to ensure it more effectively benefits recipients and contributes to job creation. They also discussed ways to expand infrastructure development in KwaZulu-Natal through collaborative efforts between national and provincial governments.

Minister Macpherson expressed his commitment to working closely with provincial leaders to unlock economic growth and job creation, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal. He emphasized the importance of unity in achieving South Africa’s development goals, stating, “It is only through working together towards a common vision that we can unlock South Africa’s potential. Let’s Build South Africa.”

The Minister also plans to meet with MECs and mayors in other provinces in the coming week to further this collaborative effort and improve the lives of South Africans across the country.
