The UN Security Council convened on Thursday to discuss the escalating situation in the Middle East, focusing on the ongoing war in Gaza, which has now entered its 11th month. Top officials and representatives from various nations, including Israel and Palestine, participated in a tense and urgent dialogue.

Numerous speakers at the meeting called for an immediate ceasefire, urging the enforcement of existing Security Council resolutions. Several members also advocated for a humanitarian pause to allow the safe delivery of polio vaccines to Gaza, where the disease has re-emerged after being eradicated 25 years ago.

Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

Tor Wennesland, the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, highlighted the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza, warning of the potential for further regional escalation. He emphasized that the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, coupled with continued occupation, has created an extremely volatile situation. "We need a ceasefire now," Wennesland urged.

Dr. Louisa Baxter, reporting from Deir Al-Balah in central Gaza, described the overwhelming destruction in the area. She noted that over 1.9 million of Gaza's 2.3 million residents have been displaced, with people "moving through streets filled with rubble, rubbish, and wastewater."

Dr. Baxter also condemned the repeated obstruction of humanitarian aid, pointing out that her team has been waiting for essential medicines for four months, with supplies being held up at crossing points due to a complex web of rules and restrictions, many of which are unwritten and arbitrary.

The Security Council's urgent discussions reflect the growing international concern over the worsening conditions in Gaza and the broader Middle East. As the conflict drags on, the need for immediate action to alleviate human suffering and prevent further escalation is increasingly critical.
