DPIIT Rescinds 2016 Memorandum on Internet Broadcasting under Copyright Act

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has withdrawn a 2016 office memorandum that extended the scope of copyright law to include internet transmissions. This decision follows a Division Bench ruling from the High Court of Bombay in the Tips Industries Ltd vs Wynk Music Ltd case.

Initially, the government included internet broadcasting under the scope of the Copyright Act through this memorandum.

DPIIT cited a Division Bench decision from the High Court of Bombay in the Tips Industries Ltd vs Wynk Music Ltd case for rescinding the 2016 memorandum.
