West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to implement strict central legislation with severe punishments for rapists, according to a senior official.

Alapan Bandopadhyay, Chief Advisor to the West Bengal Chief Minister, disclosed the contents of the letter during a press conference. The plea comes amid nationwide outrage over the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital earlier this month.

Banerjee cited alarming statistics, revealing that nearly 90 rapes occur daily across the country, often ending in the murder of the victims. In her letter, she emphasized the need for laws that impose harsh penalties for such heinous crimes and proposed the creation of fast-track courts to expedite justice, suggesting trials should conclude within 15 days.
