The Supreme Court on Thursday expressed deep concern over the Kolkata Police's delayed registration of the unnatural death case of a woman doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The apex court described the delay as 'extremely disturbing.'

A bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud questioned the timing and sequence of legal formalities and found it surprising that the postmortem was conducted on August 9 from 6.10 pm to 7.10 pm, yet the unnatural death was only reported to the Tala police station at 11.30 pm the same day.

The court has summoned the Kolkata Police officer responsible for the first entry of the incident to appear in the next hearing and provide clarity on the timeline. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the CBI, pointed out that the FIR was registered at 11.45 pm, after the doctor had been cremated.
