China has expressed strong opposition to any country permitting visits from the Dalai Lama, making this clear after senior officials from the U.S. State Department and the White House met with the Tibetan spiritual leader in New York.
During the meeting on Wednesday, U.S. officials reaffirmed their commitment to advancing human rights for Tibetans, according to the State Department.
In response, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning announced that China has lodged a solemn protest with the U.S., emphasizing the country's stance at a regular press briefing.
