In a decisive move, the Supreme Court has mandated the deployment of approximately 150 Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. This directive follows the tragic incident involving the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor earlier this month.
Reacting promptly to the apex court's order, the Union home ministry communicated with the West Bengal chief secretary to expedite the deployment of the CISF at the state-run institution. Official sources confirmed that the CISF team, led by a DIG-rank officer, has already conducted a preliminary survey of the hospital complex.
The force is primarily tasked with securing the resident doctors' hostel and other facilities to ensure the safety of medical staff. The Supreme Court has further set up a 10-member task force to develop a national protocol for the safety of doctors, with interim and final reports due in three weeks and two months, respectively.
