Japanese Spy Detained by Belarus Security Forces Amid Tensions

Belarusian security forces have detained a suspected Japanese intelligence agent alleged to have observed border areas and military installations, Belarusian media reported on Wednesday.

Reports indicate that state-owned TV channel Belarus 1 announced the arrest, with more details expected on Thursday. The Japanese national was reportedly gathering intelligence on Belarus's social and economic conditions, China's 'One Belt, One Road' initiative, and activities along its border with Ukraine.

According to Japan's embassy in Belarus, the man in his 50s was detained on July 9 for allegedly breaching local laws. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi confirmed his detention during a press briefing but refrained from commenting on the specific reasons. U.S.-funded Radio Liberty cited Belarusian TV, stating the man was apprehended in Gomel and was interested in multiple areas of the country.

The detained man had previously taught Japanese at a local university and organized cultural exhibitions. Media reports suggest this is the first instance of a Japanese citizen being implicated in espionage activities in Belarus. Japan has imposed sanctions on Belarusian entities as part of efforts to weaken support for Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
