A Samajwadi Party leader was apprehended after a video surfaced of him chasing a municipality team with a rifle, police confirmed on Wednesday. The incident took place on Tuesday when a municipal corporation team visited Vivekananda Park for cleaning, as per police reports.

An FIR has been lodged against Amarnath Maurya following a complaint by Sub-Inspector Kuldeep Upadhyay at Dhoomanganj Police Station.

The video allegedly showing Maurya chasing the team with a rifle brought the incident into the public eye. According to authorities, Maurya claimed the civic team was illicitly excavating bricks from his land, prompting him to intervene.

''When I questioned the Nagar Nigam personnel on what authority they were removing bricks from my property, they had no response. I keep a rifle for my safety since my government-provided security was withdrawn,'' said the politician, who had contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election on a Samajwadi Party ticket from Phulpur.

Maurya has been charged under Section 132, which pertains to assault with intent to obstruct government work, of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
