The Supreme Court has called for a response from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) concerning the bail application of jailed MLA Abbas Ansari, implicated in a money laundering case.
Abbas Ansari, son of deceased gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari, had his bail plea rejected by the Allahabad High Court due to the evidence presented by the ED.
A bench of justices M M Sundresh and Sandeep Mehta issued a notice to the ED requesting a reply to Ansari's challenge against the High Court's decision.
On May 9, the High Court dismissed Ansari's bail plea, citing substantial evidence of a money trail linked to him. Flow charts demonstrated an origin of funds leading to Ansari's accounts.
The court further mentioned that the money trail connected Ansari to two firms allegedly used for money laundering: M/s Vikas Construction and M/s Aaghaaz.
The ED had booked Ansari on November 4, 2022, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002, based on three earlier cases.
Currently, Ansari is lodged in Kasganj jail.
