Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reaffirmed China's support for Iran's sovereignty and security during a phone conversation with Iran's acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani on Sunday, according to a statement from China's foreign ministry.

During the call, Wang denounced the assassination of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31, describing the strike as a violation of Iran's sovereignty and a threat to regional stability.

Iran and Hamas have accused Israel of the assassination. While Israel has neither confirmed nor denied the accusation, the event has raised fears of a broader Middle East conflict. Iran has promised severe repercussions for Israel over the killing.
