Sangamon County Sheriff Jack Campbell is stepping down amid a high-profile controversy involving his deputy, Sean Grayson, who was charged with the murder of Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old Black woman. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker had previously urged Campbell to resign.

Campbell cited the current political climate as a significant challenge to his ability to perform his duties effectively. "We must honor the life of Sonya Massey by ensuring that no one else falls victim to such tragic and senseless action," Campbell stated while announcing his retirement.

The Illinois State Police released a video showing the incident, wherein Grayson fired three shots, hitting Massey once in the face. Massey had called the police regarding a suspected intruder. This case adds to the string of high-profile incidents where law enforcement has been accused of using excessive force against Black Americans.
