In a significant move for maritime legislation, Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal introduced two new bills in the Lok Sabha on Friday: the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2024, and the Bills of Lading Bill, 2024.

The proposed Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2024, aims to adhere to international conventions and accommodate the evolving global scenario in the shipping industry, Sonowal stated.

However, Saugata Roy from TMC criticized the bill, arguing that the current Indian Carriage of Goods by Sea Act, 1925, has served its purpose for nearly a century and that the new legislation only introduces minor amendments. Roy described it as unnecessary legislation. Sonowal countered this by emphasizing the need for updated laws to ensure clarity and better understanding.
