Intensification of Kursk Battles Marks Crucial Point in Russia-Ukraine War

Russia announced on Wednesday that it is engaged in intense battles against Ukrainian forces that have penetrated the Kursk region, near a significant natural gas transmission hub. This is one of the largest incursions into Russia since the war began in February 2022.

Following the failure of Ukraine's 2023 counteroffensive to make significant gains, Russia has advanced and claimed 420 sq km (162 sq miles) of territory. The Ukrainian forces struck back on Tuesday, with battles continuing through the night into Wednesday. These clashes have erupted northwest of the border town of Sudzha, located 530 km (330 miles) southwest of Moscow, according to Russia's defence ministry.

The Kurks battles come at a pivotal moment in the conflict, which is the largest land war in Europe since World War Two. With Ukraine losing territory and eyeing the November U.S. elections, both nations are pushing to secure the most advantageous positions on the battlefield.
