Every September, world leaders descend on New York City to mark the beginning of the United Nations General Assembly session.
This year, the six-day event will commence on Sept. 24 for the 79th session, featuring addresses from 87 heads of state, numerous vice-presidents, crown princes, heads of government, and others. The lineup follows a traditional hierarchy, with Brazil historically speaking first, followed by the United States.
This year's General Assembly will focus on the theme, 'Leaving no one behind: acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations.' Expected key topics include the war in Gaza, the conflict in Ukraine, climate change, and calls for UN Security Council reform.
The high-profile event will also see discussions about expanding the Security Council, adding more members, and possibly limiting veto powers held by key countries. Leaders are also likely to bring up humanitarian issues, sustainable development, and digital governance during the Summit of the Future scheduled for Sept. 22-23.
