Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan: U.N. Appeals for Urgency Amidst Famine and Conflict
A U.N. official reported to the Security Council that aid supplies for a famine-stricken camp in Sudan are ready, but conflict is blocking delivery. Over 26 million Sudanese face acute hunger due to ongoing civil war. The U.N. urges increased humanitarian funding and intervention to halt the crisis.
On Tuesday, a U.N. humanitarian official informed the Security Council that essential supplies intended for a famine-affected displacment camp in Sudan are prepared for dispatch, but civil war factions are preventing their delivery.
Edem Wosornu, operations director for the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, conveyed the critical urgency of the situation. A recent report indicates that famine is likely in the Zamzam camp, sheltering at least 500,000 people.
Sudan's conflict, which began in April 2023, has resulted in over 14,000 deaths and displaced more than 10 million individuals. Twenty-six million Sudanese face severe hunger, with ongoing efforts to deliver aid hindered by both conflict and natural obstacles. Officials urge increased financial support and intervention to mitigate the crisis.
