A Delhi Assembly committee visited the Asha Kiran Home in Rohini, West Delhi, on Saturday to investigate a series of inmate deaths.
The Committee on Petitions, led by AAP MLA Kuldeep Kumar, was reportedly stopped outside the facility. Kumar said they identified numerous deficiencies at the shelter.
Kumar questioned the appointment of an officer previously caught accepting a bribe, adding that a comprehensive report will be submitted to the Speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly.
Complaints about poor living conditions, lack of food, cleanliness, and medical treatment were raised by residents. Videos recorded will be released soon to showcase the living conditions.
The Delhi government has ordered a magisterial probe into the 14 recent deaths, and the Lt Governor has directed an investigation into the operations of Delhi's shelter homes.
AAP leaders questioned the appointment process of the shelter home's administrator, asserting an internal appointment by the Social Welfare Department. No immediate reaction was provided by the administrator, Rahul Agarwal.
