Italian Efforts to Prevent Middle East Conflict: Diplomatic Strategies and Peacekeeping Roles

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has engaged in talks with his Israeli and Lebanese counterparts, Israel Katz and Bou Habib, to avert a new war in the Middle East, he disclosed on Monday.

Following a deadly rocket attack in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights that killed 12 children and teenagers, tensions escalated between Israel and Hezbollah. Tajani believes that breaking the cycle of violence is possible if Hezbollah respects U.N. Security Council resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war.

He also noted that an Israeli attack could be prevented. Tajani mentioned on Italy's Rai News that the evacuation of about 3,000 Italian civilians in Lebanon would be necessary only if the crisis deteriorates, but he urged his compatriots to leave as a precaution.

In his social media post, Tajani reaffirmed Italy's dedication to peace and stability, highlighting the country's role in the U.N. peacekeeping force in Lebanon, UNIFIL. With over 1,000 Italian peacekeepers deployed, Tajani stressed the importance of ensuring their protection and supported mediation initiatives to foster dialogue.
