The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has launched a preliminary enquiry into an extortion racket allegedly operating out of Tihar Jail and other prisons in Delhi, according to officials. This step follows a complaint from alleged conman Sukesh Chandrashekar, and the enquiry was initiated on April 16 based on source information. The case has been assigned to the Anti-Corruption Unit, known for handling high-profile corruption cases across India.

Chandrashekar's lawyer, Ashok Kumar Singh, told PTI that the preliminary investigation is based on their complaint. The probe's initial phase aims to assess whether there is sufficient prima facie evidence to file a First Information Report (FIR).

The allegations include claims that Sandeep Goel, the then Director General of Prisons, and AIG Mukesh Prasad extorted Rs 12.5 crore from Chandrashekar's associates under the guise of providing protection and comfortable conditions within the prison. Despite Chandrashekar's prior disclosure to the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Delhi Police, no actions were taken due to Goel's influential position. The Delhi High Court has since demanded updates from the CBI, which recently confirmed that a preliminary enquiry has been set in motion.
