Secret Service Director Resigns Amid Outcry Over Trump Assassination Attempt

Kimberly Cheatle, who has led the Secret Service since August 2022, has announced her resignation following a failed assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. In an email to her staff, Cheatle accepted full responsibility for the security lapse.

Calls for her resignation had been growing after the shooter managed to get within 135 meters (157 yards) of Trump during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, despite additional security due to an existing threat from Iran.

Testifying before a congressional committee, Cheatle labeled the incident as the Secret Service's 'most significant operational failure in decades'. Lawmakers criticized her failure to provide detailed answers regarding the ongoing investigation.
