Taiwan's Military Maneuvers Adjust to Typhoon Gaemi Amid Increasing Tensions with China
Military drills off Taiwan's east coast were cancelled due to Typhoon Gaemi, though other exercises proceed. With China threatening invasion, Taiwan's annual Han Kuang drills persist, ensuring safety amid adverse weather. The exercises follow President Lai Cheng-te's election and Taiwan's bolstered defense industry.
Military drills off Taiwan's east coast were cancelled on Tuesday as an approaching typhoon prompted safety precautions. However, naval and land exercises are set to continue.
The Air Force cited adverse weather conditions from Typhoon Gaemi, which is heading towards Taiwan with winds up to 144 km/h (90 mph) and gusts reaching 180 km/h (110 mph). Ferries and some domestic flights are also cancelled as a precaution.
Military spokesperson Sun Li-fang confirmed that the annual Han Kuang exercises would proceed with adjustments. Meanwhile, Taipei conducted air raid drills, and troops were deployed to bolster port defense after a recent security breach.
