West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has extended an offer of shelter to distressed individuals from Bangladesh, in light of ongoing violence in the neighboring country. Banerjee made the statement at a public event in Kolkata.

However, sources from the Central government have stated that the state administration lacks the authority to make such decisions, calling her comments 'totally misplaced' as these matters are managed by the Union government.

Referring to the UN Resolution on refugees, Banerjee expressed her willingness to help those in need, despite recognizing that handling international crises falls under federal jurisdiction. Bangladesh is currently under a nationwide curfew due to violent protests against the government's job quota system, with over 100 reported deaths.
