Manjulamma, the mother of Raghavendra, one of the accused in the Renukaswamy murder case, died on Saturday after a prolonged illness, sources confirmed.

At aged 70, Manjulamma had been battling depression since the arrest of her son, Raghavendra, who is alleged to have had a significant role in the abduction and subsequent murder of Renukaswamy.

The case, which has garnered immense public and media attention, also involves Kannada film actor Darshan Thoogudeepa and his friend Pavithra Gowda, who are currently in jail. In addition to them, 15 others have been apprehended.

Raghavendra influenced the events significantly as the president of the Darshan Fan Club in Chitradurga. He was accused of orchestrating the abduction of Darshan's fan Renukaswamy from Chitradurga on June 8. The victim was later brought to Bengaluru, where he faced brutal torture leading to his death on June 9, allegedly for sending obscene messages to Pavithra.

The police took action and arrested Darshan and Pavithra on June 11. Following Manjulamma's death, Raghavendra's family has formally appealed to the jail authorities for permission to allow him to attend his mother's last rites.
