On Friday, a Russian court convicted Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich on espionage charges, which both his employer and the US government have dismissed as unfounded. Gershkovich received a 16-year prison sentence after a highly secretive and expedited trial conducted under Russia's politicized legal system.

Both Gershkovich and US officials vehemently denied the allegations. The Wall Street Journal called the trial a sham, a sentiment echoed by various US government representatives.

Gershkovich, 32, was detained in March 2023 during a reporting trip to Yekaterinburg in the Ural Mountains and has been imprisoned ever since. His detention marks the first instance of a US journalist being charged with espionage in Russia since 1986, creating a wave of concern among foreign journalists operating in Russia amid tightening laws on freedom of speech since Russia's Ukraine invasion.
