The Congress on Tuesday took aim at the Centre after four soldiers were killed in an encounter in Doda, challenging Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ''grand claims'' on the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

According to officials, the encounter resulted in the death of four army personnel, including an officer, following a gunfight with heavily armed terrorists in Doda district.

This latest incident comes just a week after a terrorist ambush on an Army patrol in Kathua's remote Machedi forest belt claimed five soldiers' lives and left others injured.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge expressed deep distress over the martyrdom of the soldiers, offering condolences to their families and wishing speedy recovery to the injured.

Kharge emphasized that such acts of violence by terrorists need strong condemnation and stated that the recent surge in terror attacks requires urgent recalibration of security strategies. He criticized the Modi government's approach, urging collective national efforts to combat cross-border terrorism.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh highlighted that there have been 11 terror attacks in Jammu alone in the past 78 days, questioning the previous claims of security made by government leaders.

Pawan Khera, head of Congress' media and publicity department, also demanded answers from the government, asserting that countries cannot be run on mere slogans.

This marks the third major encounter in the Doda district's forests over the past three weeks, with the Jammu region seeing a resurgence in terror attacks recently, including an attack on a pilgrim bus.
