Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were handed over to the country's anti-corruption officials for an eight-day remand to investigate a fresh case of alleged corruption on Sunday.
Arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) soon after a district and sessions court quashed their conviction in an un-Islamic marriage case, the couple's remand was confirmed by Judge Muhammad Ali Warraich at the Adiala Jail due to security concerns.
The new Toshakhana case accuses the couple of purchasing gifts from the state depository in violation of rules. This is the third Toshakhana case, and the Islamabad High Court had suspended Khan's sentences in the two previous ones. Their key victories in the Supreme Court suggest no shift in the powerful establishment's stance towards Khan since his ouster from power in 2022.
