Taiwan has issued a statement warning of the rising threat posed by the Chinese military after detecting an increasing number of warplanes near the island. The Chinese aircraft were participating in drills with China's Shandong aircraft carrier in the Pacific.
The aerial maneuvers coincide with a NATO summit in Washington, where discussions were held on China's support for Russia in the Ukraine conflict. Taiwan reported that 66 Chinese military aircraft were detected around the island in the last 24 hours, with 39 of those passing to the south and southeast regions.
Taiwan's Defense Ministry released images of a Chinese J-16 fighter and a nuclear-capable H-6 bomber as proof of the heightened activities. President Lai Ching-te promised continued strengthening of Taiwan's defenses, emphasizing the rising threat from Chinese 'grey zone' tactics.
