A 23-year-old man, Sourabh Sau, died at a hospital in West Bengal's Jhargram district on Sunday, a week after being beaten by unidentified individuals, police reported.

This marks the third mob-related death in West Bengal following similar incidents in Kolkata and nearby Salt Lake on June 28 and 29.

Sourabh Sau was found injured on a road in Jamboni area near Jhargram town and was taken to a local hospital on June 22 where he succumbed to his injuries a week later.

Police have registered a case against unnamed persons based on a complaint lodged by Sau's family on June 27. However, his family alleges he was assaulted by men hired by a contractor who accused him of trying to steal parts from an earth mover parked nearby.

Sau's mother claimed he had taken a rest under a tree while returning home on his two-wheeler when the incident occurred.

This incident follows the fatal assaults of two young men accused of stealing mobile phones in Kolkata and Salt Lake on June 28 and 29.

Prasen Mondal died after being beaten by a mob in Salt Lake on Saturday, while Irshad Alam was killed at a state-run students' hostel in Kolkata's Bowbazar area on Friday.

Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim commented that ''mass hysteria can only be tackled through mass counseling.''

Union Minister and BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar criticized the TMC government, alleging its failure to control such crimes.
