The Election Commission of India has commenced preparations for the upcoming State Assembly Elections in Haryana, Maharashtra, and Jharkhand, and the General Election to the Legislative Assembly of UT of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K). The terms of the existing Legislative Assemblies in these states are set to end between November 2024 and January 2025, necessitating elections before their completion.

Key Points:

Electoral Roll Update: The Commission has initiated the 2nd Special Summary Revision (SSR) of Electoral Rolls with July 1, 2024, as the qualifying date in Haryana, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and UT of Jammu & Kashmir. This revision aims to ensure all eligible citizens are enrolled for voting.

Pre-Revision Activities: Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will conduct house-to-house surveys to enroll unregistered eligible citizens, correct electoral roll entries, and rationalize/rearrange polling stations for voter convenience and accessibility.

Focus on Electoral Roll Integrity: Special emphasis is placed on maintaining a pure, inclusive, and updated electoral roll to uphold free, fair, and credible elections. The Commission stresses the importance of eliminating duplicate and ineligible entries.

Rationalization of Polling Stations: Polling stations will be rationalized to bring them closer to residential areas, including high-rise buildings and group housing societies, to enhance voter turnout and accessibility.

Appeal to Citizens: The Commission urges all eligible citizens to enroll themselves in the electoral roll to exercise their voting rights effectively in the upcoming elections.

The Commission's efforts aim to ensure transparent and participatory democracy by facilitating broad citizen participation in the electoral process.
