Senior BJP MP Sanjay Jaiswal, Chairperson of the Parliament Estimates Committee in Lok Sabha, took part in the 29th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP29) held in Baku, Azerbaijan. He highlighted the significance of the conference in propelling global efforts to combat climate change, particularly in emissions reduction, climate finance, and limiting global temperature rise.

During the conference, Jaiswal engaged with leaders from Bhutan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, focusing on regional climate and energy issues in South Asia. These discussions aimed at developing a coordinated regional strategy for climate negotiations. On behalf of the South Asia Regional Parliamentary Forum for Energy Cooperation, Jaiswal led a delegation comprising MPs from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.

Accompanied by Deepak Bahadur Singh from Nepal and Pema Drupka from Bhutan, Jaiswal emphasized COP29 as a key platform for global climate action. He stressed the importance of accelerating emissions reduction, enhancing climate finance, and reinforcing international commitments under the Paris Agreement. COP29 is expected to prioritize strategies for adaptation, support developing nations, and promote equitable solutions in climate finance and resource allocation.

Jaiswal further pointed out that COP29 should highlight energy transitions to foster regional cooperation in renewable energy deployment, bridging gaps between developed and developing countries. Addressing climate-linked extreme weather events, especially in South Asia, should be a priority, with discussions on loss and damage policies to manage socio-economic impacts. The outcomes of COP29 are set to shape national policies and international collaboration, crucial for advancing the global climate agenda.

Jaiswal also met with Bhutan's Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, Nepal's President Ram Chandra Poudel, and other key leaders attending COP29. His participation underscores India's commitment to tackling climate change and boosting regional cooperation, affirming COP29's influence on the global climate agenda.
