In a major bust, Israeli customs officials have intercepted a large-scale cigarette smuggling operation at Ashdod Port, uncovering goods with an untaxed value of nearly 20 million Shekels, equivalent to around USD 5.4 million. The operation led to the arrest of Yaniv Avidan, a resident of Beer Ya'akov in central Israel. Authorities suspect him of orchestrating the illegal entry of these goods.
According to documents filed by the narcotics unit at Ashdod Customs, the smuggling attempt involved the presentation of false import declarations. Earlier this month, an import declaration was submitted under the guise of 'Evelin Art Gallery Ltd,' purporting to bring in ten containers filled with washing powders and sanitary napkins.
However, investigations revealed that these consignments were initially listed under 'A.A. Management Thoughts and Business Consulting Ltd.' and were later transferred to 'Evelyn Company' before customs clearance. Upon inspection last Sunday, officials found various cigarette brands including Winston, LM, Manchester, and PINE, instead of the declared goods, unveiling the deception. (ANI/TPS)
