The United States Justice Department has unveiled charges against an Afghan native living in Oklahoma City, alleging a plot to launch an Election Day terrorist attack on behalf of the Islamic State (ISIS). Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, aged 27, is accused of conspiring and attempting to provide material support to ISIS by procuring firearms and ammunition for an assault on U.S. soil.

Authorities revealed that Tawhedi took steps to liquidate his family's assets, sought to relocate them overseas, and aimed to purchase AK-47 rifles and ammunition for the attack. Attorney General Merrick Garland emphasized the thwarting of this plot as part of ongoing efforts to counter ISIS-related threats to national security.

FBI Director Christopher Wray commended the agency's timely interference in halting the potential violence. The federal investigation uncovered Tawhedi's activities, including interactions with known ISIS recruiters and participation in pro-ISIS online communities. Upon attempting to secure weaponry from a controlled source, Tawhedi and a juvenile accomplice were apprehended just weeks before the planned attack.
