India Leads in Ozone Layer Protection on World Ozone Day

The Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Climate Change marked World Ozone Day on Friday, shedding light on India's notable journey under the Montreal Protocol. Valentin Foltescu, UNEP India's Officer in Charge, hailed India's milestones achieved through collaborative efforts of stakeholders and UN agencies.
Since 1992, India has been instrumental in safeguarding the ozone layer. Foltescu highlighted that the Montreal Protocol, a universal agreement, unites nations to phase out ozone-depleting substances, showcasing international cooperation. India's leadership in addressing climate change has been proven through the implementation of 478 projects over three decades.
Angela Lusigi, UNDP's Resident Representative, praised India's exceeding its hydrofluorocarbon reduction goal, achieving a 63% cut by 2023. She emphasized the success of the Montreal Protocol, noting the elimination of 99% of ozone-depleting substances since 1987. Lusigi highlighted ongoing efforts with micro and medium enterprises to eliminate ozone-depleting substances and foster environmentally friendly alternatives.
