Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Ukraine on Friday at the behest of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The leaders discussed achieving comprehensive and lasting peace through dialogue and diplomacy, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ukraine since 1992.
Emphasizing the importance of international law, including the UN Charter and respect for territorial integrity, both leaders agreed on the necessity of closer bilateral dialogue. They also focused on peaceful resolution and India's participation in the 2024 Summit on Peace in Ukraine held in Switzerland.
The discussions aimed to elevate Indian-Ukrainian relations to a strategic partnership, enhancing cooperation in fields like trade, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals. They also reviewed the role of the Indian-Ukrainian Intergovernmental Commission in strengthening economic ties, despite challenges from the ongoing conflict.
