The Pakistan Gemstone and Minerals Association (PGMA) is grappling with significant challenges due to stringent regulatory conditions. According to WTV News, the obstacles include difficulties in securing No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) and explosive licenses, leading to halted mining activities and severe economic repercussions like unemployment and revenue losses.
A major convention was held on Wednesday in Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan (PoGB) by the PGMA, where members emphasized the hardships faced by mine workers in the region. One member stated, 'Due to strict conditions, obtaining NOCs for using explosive materials in mines has become an issue. Consequently, all mining operations have ceased, harming our business. We request authorities to address these issues urgently.'
The member also noted, 'Previously, securing documentation and power of attorney was straightforward, but now it has been removed. This is critical as all mines in PoGB are closed, leading to unemployment. Despite recommendations for changes to the 2024 mineral rules, no action has been taken.'
The PGMA has issued a warning that if their demands are not met within a week, they will begin protests, WTV News reported. Frequent protests in Gilgit-Baltistan stem from economic, administrative, and political issues, reflecting the region's broader struggle for better governance and improved living conditions.
