The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) has made a fervent demand for either jobs or a monthly unemployment benefit for the unemployed youths of Delhi. The announcement was made during a press conference on Friday.
DYFI revealed plans to stage a protest outside the residence of Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on September 14 to further press their demands. Rikta Krishnaswamy, DYFI's state president, highlighted the growing number of unemployed youths in the national capital.
Krishnaswamy cited the alarming statistic of 20 lakh educated unemployed youths registered with Delhi's government employment offices, with many more unregistered. Slogans calling for jobs or unemployment benefits were voiced during the press conference.
Aman Saini, DYFI secretary, criticized the BJP government at the Centre and the AAP government at the state level. He cited RTI data revealing that more than 50% of positions in Delhi's government departments are vacant, including a significant number of teachers, doctors, and other essential staff.
Krishnaswamy pointed out that DYFI had previously protested at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's residence in 2021, demanding a monthly unemployment benefit of Rs 5,000 for all unemployed youths. Although a partial announcement was made in 2022, the benefit was limited to graduates and postgraduates. The DYFI now demands its unconditional and immediate implementation.
