Italian authorities have successfully dismantled an alleged counterfeit olive oil operation, seizing 42 tons of purported extra virgin olive oil valued at nearly USD 1 million in southern Italy, according to a CNN report. The Carabinieri stated that seven individuals are facing charges including criminal conspiracy, food adulteration, and fraud in public military supplies.

The crackdown, conducted overnight in the Puglia region, targeted 18 garages and warehouses. Authorities found oil already packaged for distribution, 71 tons of an 'oily substance' in plastic tanks, and 623 liters of chlorophyll meant to enhance inferior oils' appearance. Packaging equipment, counterfeit labels, and forged customs stamps were also confiscated.

Additionally, vans, loading equipment, and computers were seized, along with 174 bottles of suspected counterfeit champagne awaiting verification. The investigation, which began in September, led to the arrest of 11 individuals in Italy and Spain and the seizure of 12 barrels containing 260,000 liters of adulterated olive oil. Rising fraudulent practices in the olive oil industry are driven by the Mediterranean diet's popularity and climate change-induced droughts affecting olive production, as reported by the International Olive Council.
