In a dramatic turn of events, proposed talks to resolve the RG Kar hospital impasse between agitating junior doctors and the Bengal government fell through on Thursday after protestors refused to enter the meeting venue following the state's rejection of their demand to live telecast the meeting.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed disappointment over the talks not fructifying, saying she was "ready to relinquish her chair for the sake of the people" but emphasized the need for normalcy in state-run healthcare, crippled by the month-long 'cease work' of junior doctors.
Expressing similar disappointment, the agitating doctors said they would continue their agitation but remained open for talks. Banerjee, who waited for two hours and 10 minutes for the doctors, cited sub-judice matters as the reason for not live-streaming. Protestors, who continued their standoff, insisted their demand was solely for transparency.
